Australia boasts a plethora of remarkable bands, yet AC/DC stands head and shoulders above them all, enduring and captivating audiences for nearly five decades since its formation in Sydney back in 1973.

In a continued celebration of AC/DC and its music, the Royal Australian Mint has unveiled a special collection of six colorized coins, valued at 20 cents each, to honor the band and five of its iconic albums released between 2022 and 2023.

The band was originally founded by Scottish-born brothers Malcolm and Angus Young in 1973, drawing inspiration for their name from a sewing machine’s label—AC/DC.

Following a brief flirtation with glam rock, AC/DC embraced its trademark heavy rock sound, famously performed at deafening volumes in electrifying live venues. This distinctive style garnered a fiercely loyal fan base, first in Australia and later abroad as the band conquered the American music scene.

AC/DC’s productivity has been as remarkable as its thunderous sound, amassing a staggering collection of 17 studio albums and selling over 200 million records. The journey began with their debut release, ‘High Voltage,’ in 1975, followed by an impressive streak of 11 albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

To pay tribute to AC/DC’s indelible mark on music, the Royal Australian Mint has embarked on a coin release initiative, with their latest offering, Volume II, commemorating five albums: ‘Let There Be Rock’ (1977), ‘Powerage’ (1978), ‘Flick the Switch’ (1983), ‘Blow up Your Video’ (1988), and ‘Black Ice’ (2008).
