Description

The 1983 Canadian penny is a collector’s favorite, continuing the bold 12-sided (dodecagonal) tradition established just a year prior. This “Proof-Like” (PL) edition is a standout, offering a level of detail and “frozen-in-time” luster that simply doesn’t exist in general circulation.

Product Highlights

  • Exceptional PL Finish: Struck with specially polished dies for mirrored fields and a high-contrast, sharp relief.

  • The 12-Sided Era: A prime example of Canada’s short-lived experimentation with the multi-sided penny (1982–1996).

  • The “Bead” Variety: 1983 is famous for having two distinct obverse varieties—Near Beads and Far Beads. Collectors often seek both to complete the set!

  • Mint Condition: Uncirculated and preserved in a collector-grade flip to maintain its original copper-red brilliance.

In 1983, the Royal Canadian Mint was in full swing with its new 12-sided design, but not all pennies were created equal. While billions were struck for change, only a fraction were selected for Proof-Like sets. These coins feature a “cameo” effect where the Queen’s portrait and the maple leaves appear to float against a mirror-like background.

Because this coin is from the early 80s, finding one that hasn’t developed “carbon spots” or dulling is rare. This 1983 PL penny is an essential upgrade for any Canadian small cent collection.
