Wearing slouch hats, blue flannel shirts, brown trousers, leggings, and handkerchiefs knotted loosely around their necks, they were the epitome of a “cowboy cavalry.” The Rough Riders attained ever-lasting glory after charging up San Juan Hill on July 1, 1898 in one of the most significant battles of the war.
