While there are many iterations of how the 12 animals in the zodiac came to be, the most popular involves the Jade Emperor and a race. The Jade Emperor created a race across a rapid river involving all of the animals. The first 12 that finished would be represented in the zodiac. The dragon finished 5th and as such, is the 5th animal in the zodiac. Notably, the dragon is the lone mythical creature in the zodiac as well.
